What an exciting week at the YBOA National Championships in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The girls played great all week and came back as the Number 1 9 & under YBOA team in the nation, 10 & under Team Shooting National Champions and 3rd place 10 & under National Champions. I am so proud of each of them (Bayley, Emerald, Ariana, Jemisha, Taylor, Janetta, Chanelle, Tyler, Chandrica, Miyah, Morgan, Passion). In addition to the 12 players, we had all of the players’ parents attend. Combined we had a total of 55 members of the Carolina All-Stars Family in attendance. Friday, July 2, 2004: The adventure started with a 650 mile drive on I-40 to I-95. There was some July 4th weekend traffic that made the trip take about 11 hours on the way down versus the 9 ½ hours on the way back on Saturday, July 10th. We spent the night at the Howard Johnson (which will never stay in again). Saturday, July 3, 2004: We got up early to attend the team registration at the host hotel (Holiday Inn – Cocoa Beach). The girls were interviewed individually by YBOA officials to verify their birth date and registration information. They were also required to attend an orientation session on sportsmanship. After registration, the girls took pictures (team and individual) which turned out great. We then switched hotels from the Howard Johnson to the Suburban (great move). From all accounts, the Suburban was the perfect hotel for the week. The only thing missing was a pool. The opening ceremonies began in the evening in which the girls participated with team from over 30 other states and several foreign countries including Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica. After the opening ceremonies the girls traded pins with the other teams. We did not have any games on Saturday. Sunday, July 4, 2004: The girls 1st game of the week was against the NEA Hawks. We came out strong defensively with a (13-2) lead after the 1st quarter and lead at halftime by 12 (19-7). We won the game by 21 points (Carolina All-Stars 32, NEA Hawks 11). All players played and eight players scored lead by Chanelle with 7 points, Chandrica (6 pts), Tyler (5 pts), Emerald & Jemisha (4 pts each) and Taylor, Morgan & Miyah (2 pts each). After the game, the girls participated in the Skills Contest Qualifying. Chanelle participated in the 3-Point Shooting Contest, Miyah participated in the Hot-Shot Contest, Morgan participated in the Free Throw Contest and the five members of the Team Shooting Team were Bayley, Emerald, Taylor, Jemisha and Tyler. The Team Shooting Team qualified for the finals on Tuesday night. Our second game on Sunday was against Griffin Drill Team (An All-10 year old team). Again, we came out strong against a team that was bigger than us at every position. The Griffin Drill Team had a 6’ 1” center that scored 16 points, mostly on offensive rebounds. Tyler gave us a very strong 1st quarter with 7 points including a three pointer and a (11-10) lead after the 1st quarter. We had a slow 2nd and 3rd quarter and scored a combined 9 points (3 in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd) and were down (20-31) to begin the 4th quarter. Griffin quickly scored 4 points to begin the 4th quarter taking a 15 point lead (20-35). The team did not give up and scored the game’s next 15 points to tie the score at (35-35). Taylor had an awesome 4th quarter knifing through the Griffin defense for 8 exciting 4th quarter points and Chandrica was relentless on defense and on the offensive backboard to score 6 points in the 4th quarter comeback. The Griffin Drill Team 6’ 1” center however had the last say in the game’s outcome scoring on an offensive rebound with less than 30 second left in the game. Though, we were defeated (35-37), I was very proud of how the girls did not give up and fought to the end. Morgan, Tyler and Chandrica battled on the backboards all game. Chandrica made 6 out of 8 free throw attempts. Six players scored lead by Taylor and Chandrica with 10 points each, Tyler (8 pts), Chanelle and Morgan (2pts each) and Jemisha (1 pt). Monday, July 5, 2004: Our next game was against another all 10-year old team, Westside Athletics. I will say very little about this game, except to say it was not a very good game for the coach, team or parents. The officiating was the worst all season. We did not have a very good game with turnovers and made only 2 out of 20 free throws attempts. We were defeated (13-29). Six players scored led by Jemisha with 4 points, Tyler (3 pts), Taylor and Chandrica (2 pts each) and Janetta and Miyah (1 pt each). After the game to relax, we all went out for a day on the beach in Cocoa Beach. In the late afternoon, YBOA sponsored a Pizza Party at a local miniature golf course for the players. I was able to get away to the Melbourne Golf Course for my only round of the week. Bobby Fuller went with me to relax. Next year, I am going to get him to play. I shot an 87. That’s pretty good considering I have played very little since YBOA and AAU season begun in March. In the evening, we all had a big cook out at the hotel. Tuesday, July 6, 2004: On next game was against our old nemesis Team Heat. We jumped on them from the beginning of game with 7 1st quarter points from Chandrica and led (12-2) after the 1st quarter. The problem with Team Heat is that the girls have become close friends with Team Heat and do not have the same drive to defeat them. By the end of the 3rd quarter, we only led (20-18). Poor free throw shooting affected us again making only 5 out of 28 attempts. We found our defense again in the 4th quarter allowing Team Heat only 4 points. Jemisha and Chandrica scored 6 points each in the 4th quarter and we defeated Team Heat (35-24) to get back on the winning track. All players played and seven players scored led by Chandrica with 16 points, Jemisha (10 pts), Emerald and Taylor (3 pts each), Tyler (2 pts) and Bayley and Morgan (1 pt each). In the evening, we went to the skills contest finals. This is where the girls won the 10-under Team Shooting National Championship in front of nearly 2,000 people. Wednesday, July 7, 2004: This was our day off with no games. We spent the day in Orlando at Universal Studios. Everyone had a great time at Universal Studios. We had fun with the rides, shows, games and food. A grand time was had by all. I especially enjoyed The Return of the Mummy ride and Jimmy Neutron. Many us stayed until the park closed at 10 pm. Thursday, July 8, 2004: Games resumed on Thursday. With pool play ending, the games started to count for real for the championship with Bracket Play. The girls were ready to play taking a commanding (28-6) lead at halftime. We had an excellent defensive game allowing a total of 9 points and defeated Burke Jammers (42-9). All players played and five players scored led by Tyler with 12 points, Chandrica (11 pts), Jemisha (10 pts), Taylor (5 pts) and Emerald (4 pts). We had a team dinner at Beef O’ Brady’s and enjoyed a great cake (that Birshari got designed for team) with ice cream for everyone back at the hotel. The parents were able to get together to plan for the future and assess the season. Everyone is already excited for the next season. It was agreed that parent’s would take more leadership and would work on fundraising all year round. The McGee’s had some fried fish that Mr. McGee had caught. Friday, July 9, 2004: The girls had a morning game against the Team Heat again. This time the team took no prisoners. We led (18-0) after the 1st quarter behind 8 points from Tyler. Tyler dominated the entire game on both ends of the court. We defeated Team Heat by 31 points (48-17). All players played and six players scored led by Tyler’s spectacular game high 23 points, Chandrica (9 pts), Jemisha (6 pts), Taylor (5 pts), Morgan (4 pts) and Emerald (1 pt). In between games, the team and families went to the movies. Some went to see Spiderman 2, Shrek 2 and Fahrenheit 9-11. In the afternoon, we had a rematch against Griffin Lady Drill. We started the game out with a (7-6) lead after the 1st quarter and exploded for 17 2nd quarter points to take a 24-18 halftime lead. Chandrica, Tyler and Morgan held the Drill 6’ 1” center to only 2 points at halftime. The 3rd quarter began well for us in which we were able to increase our lead to 12 points, but an end of quarter run by Lady Drill cut our lead to (33-28) at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was nip and tuck until Tyler was called for her 4th foul. After a hard fought game we were defeated (36-40). Everyone took this loss especially hard, parents included. Taylor keep us in the game making some incredible shots. Five players scored led by Tayor’s awesome game high 15 points, Tyler (8 pts), Jemisha (7 pts), Chandrica (5 pts) and Emerald (1 pt). In evening, we all enjoyed our last day in Florida at the beach. Saturday, July 10, 2004: We all packed up and check out the hotel. We had a 3rd/ 4th place game against the Burke Jammers. The girls had a hard time getting up for this game after the emotional game against Lady Drill. We only led (4-3) after the 1st quarter and (16-8) at halftime. They came out on fire in 3rd quarter with our highest offensive quarter all week with 19 points. We led (35-14) after the 3rd quarter. All players played and we won with a final score of (39-22). Eight players scored with Passion scoring her 1st 2 points all season. Jemisha led us with 14 points, Taylor (8 pts), Chandrica (5 pts), Chanelle (4 pts) and Emerald, Janetta, Tyler and Passion (2 pts each). The girl’s captured 3rd place in the 10-Under YBOA National Championships and defeated every 9-Under team to end the season as the Number 1 9-Under YBOA Team in Nation. Chandrica and Jemisha were named the All-Tournament Team and Tyler and Taylor were named All-Tournament Honorable Mention. During the week, we enjoyed the fellowship, playing dominos, game boy, food, beach and great basketball. God truly blessed the entire Carolina All-Stars family during our trip.
Congratulations to Jemisha Lee and Chandrica Fuller being voted to the YBOA Nationals 10 & Under All-Tournament Team. Tyler Holloway and Taylor Torres were honorable mentioned having also received votes for the 10 & Under All-Tournament Team.
The Carolina All-Stars won the 10 & Under National Team Shooting Championship in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The five-member team consisted of Bayley Cox, Emerald Smith, Taylor Torres, Jemisha Lee and Tyler Holloway.
The Carolina All-Stars 9 & Under Team win the 2004 Great Smokies Shootout in Asheville with a undefeated 5-0 record and end the 2004 YBOA season as the Number 1 YBOA 9 & Under Team in the State of North Carolina with the best team record in YBOA competition.
